5/16/08 - Concert Review in Freeman Courier
We'd like to thank Tim L. Waltner for writing a great concert review and article on Jack's show this past weekend at the Freeman Academy in Freeman, South Dakota. Although this was a rare performance for a (mostly) adult audience by Jack and the Mullet River Boys, there is a lot of discussion within the article on Jack's music for children. We really appreciate the kind words and great article! A big "hello" to all our new friends in Freeman!
We are featured in today's Raising Arizona Kids magazine! Here's a reprint of the article and photo...thanks for Dan and everyone at Raising Arizona Kids for their support!
Music with Zing By Daniel Friedman
Jack and Kitty Norton of Cave Creek play hundreds of concerts for crowds of adoring, devoted fans. The Nortons created Zinghoppers characters and music to get children ages 4 and younger moving and singing along. The characters Penelope Possum (that's her at left, recording their latest CD), Coconuts the Kangaroo, Olo the Donkey and Conductor [Jack] are animated and innocent, just like the fans. ?Good kids? music should not be annoying to adults,? says Jack. ?And [kids] should respond instinctively to the beat and the characters singing it.?
Jack played bluegrass with the Mullet River Boys, sharing the stage with performers including Norah Jones, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. He and Kitty both earned degrees in early childhood education from the University of Minnesota to inform their music and make sure it is developmentally appropriate for their fans. (For example, singing ?Hop on one foot? may not work for a child who can?t yet do that.) Kitty writes most of the songs, scripts performances and lends her voice to some of the characters.
The Zinghoppers toured Australia last year, are on the road right now and they?re back in the Valley in June. Check out their concert schedule at zinghoppers.com.

4/16/08 - Conductor Jack on "The Country Giant"
Toot! Toot!
Conductor Jack will be interviewed on Friday morning (April 18) at 7:15 AM on The Country Giant's award-winning radio morning show hosted by Gator & The StyckMan.
Residents in the Upper Cumberlands (Cookeville, Tennessee) can tune in to the Country Giant (WGSQ) at 94.7 FM or listeners worldwide can visit online at: www.countrygiant.com.
Jack will be discussing his shows on Friday, April 18 and Friday, May 16 at the Cookeville Children's Museum. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $5.00 per family. The museum is located at 36 W. 2nd Street on Cookeville's Westside, at the corner of Cedar Avenue and 2nd Street. For more information on this great museum, click here.
We'd like to thank Gator & The StyckMan and WGSQ FM for supporting children's music!
4/10/08 - Words & Music Program
Jack will be a participating songwriter for the Country Music Hall of Fame's Words and Music Education Outreach Program.
Classes participating in the program complete a four-part lesson plan, developed by the Museum, which highlights the lyric-writing process. Students write or co-write lyrics in the classroom; the lyrics are then given to professional songwriters, who refine their lyrics and add melodies. Finally, students visit the Museum for a tour and a performance of their songs by their participating songwriter.
More than 4,700 kindergarten through 12th-grade students at 51 Tennessee and Florida schools wrote songs that were put to music by 48 volunteer professional songwriters throughout the 2007-08 school year. This is the 29th year that the Museum has offered its Words & Music program.
Stay tuned. We'll try to add song samples of the tunes Jack writes with the students!

Presented annually by the Country Music Association, this world-class event has grown to attract nearly 200,000 fans from around the world in 2007, while simultaneously raising money for "Keep the Music Playing," a music education initiative in local public schools through a partnership with the Nashville Alliance for Public Education.
